Make a Plan to Declutter Tip #5 {Measure As You Purge}

If you are just joining us, you'll want to start here or check out my Clutter-Free Guide to Organizing and Managing Your Classroom.

TIP # 5: Measure your space(s) as you purge.

Bring your sorting bins over to the area you are working on.

Depending on the size / location you are decluttering you will need to use either your small sorting bins or your larger set. Place them in an way that will allow you to easily drop items into each bin.

Start your timer.
Rather you are using music or an actual timer, set a goal for the area you are decluttering and get that clock ticking.

Take everything out of the space.
You need to remove every single item. Quickly decide if it will be kept or purged. If it is something you are discarding then put it into it’s proper bin (recycle, trash, donate, sell).

Wipe and measure.
Quickly wipe down the surface of the area you are decluttering. Use your tape measure to determine how much space you have (length, width, and height). Record that information.

I even made you a measurement recording sheet as a a freebie. You'll find it on My Products page. This page will be handy-dandy when you start thinking about organizing and storing (a step we'll discuss later).
