I began adding telling time helpers to my classroom clock about ten years ago when I was teaching first grade and my little friends were just beginning to understand the concept of telling time. Now that most clocks are digital, I find it is really helpful to have this resource available to my students.

If you use a bathroom sign-out routine for students as a classroom management strategy when using the restroom, you’ll find these handy helpers to be quite useful.

Two summers ago I created ink-saving telling time helpers (as part of the Blackline Design Collection) that could be customized to coordinate with any classroom theme or color scheme by simply printing them onto paper or card stock that complements your room. I made mine in bright colors and they held up great for two school years.

When I was making over my classroom for the new year I decided I was ready for a change. Each of my classroom themes and all of my color scheme classroom essential bundles include a set of time telling helpers. I opted to use the ones that are included in the Black Polka Dot Bundle and then mounted them onto aqua card stock circles to give them an extra pop of color.

I will do a mini-lesson during our daily guided math workshop on how to use them once the students arrive. It’s great to see how much use they get each year.
